Remaking News of the Week: What lawyers learn from Deep Blue

We all know IBM’s Deep Blue computer narrowly defeated Garry Kasparov in 1997, having lost the first match a year earlier.

Then in 2015 Google’s DeepMind triumphed in the AlphaGo versus Lee Sedol match. 

Now comes the story of AI defeating not one, but 20, corporate lawyers: 20 top lawyers were beaten by legal AI.

Here’s a quick summary

Twenty top US corporate lawyers were pitted against an AI. Their task was to spot issues in five NDAs.

The study was carried out under the supervision of leading academics. LawGeex AI achieved an average 94% accuracy rate, higher than the lawyers who achieved an average rate of 85%. It took the lawyers an average of 92 minutes to complete the NDA issue spotting task, compared to 26 seconds for the LawGeex AI. The longest time taken by a lawyer to complete the test was 156 minutes, and the shortest time was 51 minutes.
