Remaking news of the week: Deloitte acquires law offices

On Law.Com on June 06, 2018, Dan Packel reported that Deloitte UK will acquire the Berry Appleman & Leiden’s eight overseas offices. This is in addition to regulation-circumventing (my words) alliance between Deloitte and Berry Appleman & Leiden’s US operations.

Interestingly, the BAL website has this to say “BAL is always expanding, and today we have 18 offices globally to serve you wherever you are and wherever you need to be”; these include Maputo, Melbourne and Sao Paulo.

Dan concludes with an understatement, “The Big Four are continuing their march into the legal services realm“. More like another stride in consolidation, globalization sprint race amongst the Big Four, I’d say.

Last week’s news

Consolidation is not happening in the US market (or for that matter in any other market?)

The award of an ABS licence in the UK on 15 June means Deloitte now has rights of audience, conduct of litigation, reserved instrument activities, probate activities and administration of oaths. Their offices are in the UK, Singapore, Australia, Dubai, China, South Africa, Mozambique, and Brazil. PwC, KPMG, and EY all received SRA approval in 2014.
